Shirodhara

The term ‘Shirodhara’ comes from two Sanskrit words, where ‘Shiro’ means ‘head’ and ‘dhara’ implies to ‘pouring or sprinkling something’, together it infers to dripping or pouring of warm herbal ayurvedic oils on the forehead from a specific height, for a specific time period in a continuous steady stream.

It brings the mind, body and soul to a harmonious level.

 

Types of Shirodhara Massage

​

  • Taila Dhara (Thaila Dhara): A single type of oil or a mixture of several ayurvedic oils are used.

 

  • Dugadha Dhara (Ksheerdhara): The main ingredient used is milk.

 

  • Takra Dhara (Thakradhara): Uses buttermilk as the main ingredient.

 

  • Kwatha Dhara (Decoction): Depending upon the diagnosed condition or dosha imbalance, the main ingredient in kwatha dhara consists of decoctions made by using various herbs.

 

  • Jala Dhara (Aqueous formulation): Mostly uses coconut water as the main ingredient for the treatment. Generally used in case of Pitta imbalance in the body.

How Does Shirodhara Work?

​

  • The infusion of oils or other liquids when poured onto the head and scalp produces a soothing and calming sensation on the muscles of the head, which in turn passes via the superficial peripheral nerves of the forehead to the brain.

  • By soothing the hypothalamus, it regulates the activity of the pituitary gland and treats conditions like insomnia by inducing sleep.

  • Stimulates the various vital points all around the head and improves blood circulation. The warm herbal oils used for this process causes vasodilatation of all the blood vessels and thus improves the blood circulation in the brain.

  • Brings down the elevated serotonin levels, a neurotransmitter that stabilizes our mood, feelings of well-being, and happiness.

  •  Reduces the level of stress hormones such as adrenaline and noradrenaline and thus relaxes the mind and thereby relives stress and tension.

  • Eliminates the harmful AMA toxins from the body & relieves stress, gets rid of mental exhaustion and treat a host of disorders.

  • Shirodhara works on multiple layers of the being like exfoliate dead skin cells, transporting lymphatic fluids, mitigating stress, expunging muscular tension, balancing dosha elements, or obliterating toxins.

  • Enhances the function of the central nervous system.

Netra Tarpana 

“Netra” meaning eyes and “Tarpana” meaning rehydration

 

Description

​

Circular formed frames made of a powdered Masha paste are placed around the eyes. Lukewarm medicated “ghee” combined with medicinal herbs (according to the dosha) is then poured on closed eyes within the frames of the Masha paste. The patient is instructed to open and close their eyes intermittently which allows the medicinal properties of the liquified Ghritas to soak through. Depending on the intensity of the ailment dictates how long the Ghritas should stay on the eyes. The time period ranges from one to five days as per ailment.

How it works

​

  • Eyes are main sites of pitta dosha called alocha.

  • Ghee is a healing agent lubricates, and revitalizes the eyes. This treatment improves inner vision by cleaning even the smallest channels associated with inner and outer perception. As impurities are expelled and ailments are corrected, it helps bring back clarity to the eyes

  • Eyes are the windows to our soul”. The eye feeds visual stimuli to the brain.

Vital points (Marmas)of the eye controls a specific kind of action related to the mind and body: Netra Tarpana rejuvenates and relieves the stress accumulated in the eyes and helps these marmas to work effortlessly.

  1. Ajna and Staphani – focuses on the connection between the eyes, brain, and the mind. Ajna connects the eyes and the mind while Staphani improves the interaction between brain and eye function.

  2. Apanga and Shankha – releases any tension that may be present in and around the eye. The Shankha marma is specifically related to tension and heaviness.

  3. Phana – associated with the nostrils and is divided into the left and right. This distinction between the nostrils relates to Soma and Agni. The Soma cools the eyes while the Agni helps the eyes and brain coordinate visual information being received and processed.

  4. Urdhaw and Adhoakshi – provide the eyes with life energy or Prana. This is a method that heals the body by treating one’s energy field.

  • Any pain and burning sensation in the eyes conjunctivitis.

  • Early formations of cataracts, insomnia, glaucoma, and conjunctivitis.

  • Corneal Ulcers, Dry Eye Syndrome, Refractive errors of the eyes.

  • This treatment can be used in extremely healthy person on a daily basis to protect their eyes from harm as it relieves the strain due to constant glaring at Computer and TV screens.

  • It helps to bring back brightness and clarity to the eyes.

Abhyangam

Abhyangam’ is a Sanskrit word which means oil application.

It is commonly known as Ayurvedic Oil Massage.

 

Procedure

​

Ayurvedic Oil Massage (Abhyangam) is performed in certain different classical positions with long flowing strokes. Prescribed warm Herbal oil is applied using soft and gentle strokes, followed by a steam bath (Swedana).

 

The number of strokes used and amount of pressure applied depends upon individual’s requirements and Prakruti. The herbal oil (Gingelly oil, mustard oil, Olive oil) used as per the patients Prakruti and presenting conditions.

Types of Abhyangam

 

  • Sarvanga Abhyangam- A massage performed on full body.

  • Ekanga Abhyangam- A massage of a specific part of body.

  • Padabhyangam- A massage that focus only on foot.

  • Shiroabhyagam – A head massage.

Udwarthanam

  • It is a special therapeutic deep tissue massage using herbal powder.

  • Udwarthanam is a body toning program, with the application of a combination of prescribed herbal powder and oil on the entire body.

 

Procedure

​

Udwarthanam means to ‘elevate or to promote’, hence, the massage involves upward stroking, with warm powder or paste (Herbal powder with or without ghee) which is rubbed forcibly on the body.

How it works

 

It promotes active blood flow; it stimulates and reconditions the body. The therapy pacifies the aggravated Kapha dosha, reduces excess fat from the subcutaneous tissues, purifies, improves mobility of joints, strengthens the muscles, rejuvenates the body, opens up the body channels.

Types of Udwarthanam:

​

  1. Snigdha Udwarthanam: The herbal powder it is mixed up with ghee or oil and later applied to the body.

  2. Ruksha Udwarthanam: ruksha means dry. Dry herbal powder is used but No oil is mixed.
